10. Spread the news

Sketch a schematic outline for a city with 10.000 new arriving inhabitants. Show the basic types of buildings like housing, community, schools, health, production units.

The town shall become a permanent, green, and healthy living habitat.

Show a city/place/street system that is easy to install and which can grow along with more people coming. Since nobody can estimate the final size of the city, make the size breathable. The city must have ability to grow and shrink as the demand changes without falling into slum structures. Think of modules that can serve as a base unit which can be multiplied on demand if the population rises from 10,000 to 150,000 people.

Please think of a welcome system that avoids chaos when new arrivals come to the city and provides them with basic needs.

For example, building interim housing systems which are easy to install or disassemble and reused several times should not mean using tents or other unstable structures.

Define the arrangement of different types of city spaces.

Cities should have an arrangement of elements like housing, shopping, industrial facilities as well as green community spaces. Calculate the total area your city design demands in square meters and hectare.
Consider that 60 % of the city areas will be used for houses, streets, and others and therefore be saved permanently.
Draw the outlines and give ideas on how to harvest and reuse the rainwater falling on the paved areas so that 100% of local rain will be available for the city green, farming, open water bodies, groundwater table, and the local rainwater cycle as well.

  • Research and design housing solutions, there are already plenty of available intelligent solutions.
  • Feel free to use them as inspiration for your personal design.
  • Houses shall have minimum of 25 sqm per person, a minimum ceiling height of 2.30 m, a kitchen, a bathroom with a water toilet or an alternative dry toilet-system.
  • Houses shall have a chance to grow. Therefore think oftwo to three storey structures that are easy to expand based on a simple structural system. Easy and cheap structures are not excuses for buildingunpleasant and ugly habitats. It also does not mean that these buildings have no balcony, no porch, or no sunroof.
  • When you design a housing cluster, make sure every house has a patio garden up to 250 square meters where the harvested rainwater can be used for other sustainable technologies.

Design a system which is able to collect, store and reuse rainwater; sewage water and drinking water.

Rainwater

Harvest the rainwater for exterior planting system on the roofs and walls.  Prioritize food plants such as fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices in the project. Calculate the annual amount of rainwater and the period of rain.

Show how to harvest the rain water and how this water can be channelized to the food production and groundwater bodies, so nothing is lost.

Wastewater

Sewage is a major issue which can be solved with simple solutions that can be easily maintained. The sewage water must be treated in many phases. Primarily on a local level and later . Propose a schematic plan that includes a large-scale industrial sewage cleaning facilities.

Drinking Water

Drinking water is a necessity. So, calculate the needed amount of water per person a day and show how this can be provided in simple clean and healthy systems accessible for every household.

Refuse | Reduce | Reuse | Rot the rest

“Refuse what you do not need; reduce what you do need; reuse what you consume; recycle what you cannot refuse, reduce, or reuse; and rot (compost) the rest.” – Bea Johnson

Please take into consideration that these new cities do not have the money to install modern, high end facilities from the beginning. Also, it is important that you provide a concept of how garbage can be avoided, reduced, recycled on the individual house property at the beginning. Furthermore please consider a place  for a final landfill as the city grows.

Calculate the food required, land areas needed, and production lines.

The new city should be able to produce its own basic foods for its inhabitants.

Provide a rough estimate of the food needed in Kilo Calories for 10,000 Inhabitants and sketch the food supporting sector, ranging from traditional farming as well as modern industrial farming, aquaponics, animal production.

Calculate a rough estimate of the area of land that is needed for this, and Show where you want to install this area in and around the city.

Sketch a basic idea of how jobs can be created in this food production industry as well as food processing.

Prioritize sustainable energy production systems for the city. Use no tech and low-tech systems such as geological heat, impact of the sun, the wind or the water to produce electricity. Avoid burning systems from fuel, wood or waste wherever possible.

Give an overview of can the economy in the new city be developed into a stable income and tax-producing system.

There is a fundamental need for jobs and a steady family income.

Think about how more job opportunities be created, such as schooling, health care, community work, and others.

After initial investments by donors, the city will develop an operational success inside the country’s economy.

People will start generating their own income, pay taxes, consume, and become a business hub that brings prosperity to the entire region. Show existing financing options such as micro-credits, national funds, and think of this new city as an investment into the future.

Conceptualize what we want and how we get there. We can build up a strong strategy for migrants it will be a win-win for each and every one.

Plan the city and it’s functions in harmony with nature.

Since the design is from scratch, calculate the natural areas in sqm/hectare and put them in places that can stay untouched. Calculate 50 % of the city spaces and 50 % of the farming spaces for this as an addition to your master plan. Keep in mind, these areas must be kept untouched during the entire growing process and in the future.

Propose a plan of spreading the news of the project globally. Please unleash your imagination, – lets realize it together.
